She was inspired after watching Japanese runner Naoko Takahashi win gold in the marathon at the 2000 Olympic Games in Sydney. She initially competed in long-distance running in middle school, but began to focus on race walking in high school after an athletics coach told her she had the potential to compete internationally in the discipline.
