COMMITTING TO MARATHON
She says she was initially uncertain about transitioning from long-distance track events to marathon running due to injury concerns. She had suffered stress fractures to her right foot in both 2007 and 2008, and was forced to withdraw from the 10,000m at the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro after a stress fracture in her left foot developed into a bone fracture during the Games. In 2018 her coach Masahiko Takahashi took her marathon training in Boulder, CO, United States of America, in an attempt to convince her to pursue the discipline. She competed in her first marathon at the 2018 Hokkaido Marathon in Japan, where she went on to finish first. "When I thought about the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo, I wanted to widen the choice of events that I would be able to compete in. Therefore, I became willing to get involved in marathon. In Boulder, I realised that if I cannot run now, I won't be able to run on the competition day either. I finally thought like, 'Let's try first. If I get injured, I will think about it when it comes'." (ctv.co.jp, 26 Jan 2020)
