He took up the sport at age 10 and began taking it more seriously at age 14. "Coach Miguel Angel Rodriguez asked me if I was doing it as a hobby or if I wanted to do it properly. So I decided to focus on the sport." (gob.mx, 07 Apr 2021; olympics.com, 20 May 2021)

He began race walking after meeting Mexican race walker Horacio Nava at a school athletics competition. "I remember I went to a school competition and there he was. I was only 10. We started talking and I think he liked me because a few days later we were training partners." He grew up in a disadvantaged part of Chihuahua, Mexico, and says this also influenced his decision to pursue the sport. "I come from a neighbourhood where the easiest thing to do is start smoking or taking drugs. However, sports appealed to me in such a way that I always thought doing those things was wrong."
