She took up the sport in 2012. (com.org.mx, 21 Dec 2020)

She decided to start running when she entered university. She got involved more in the sport and then a coach encouraged her to take it more seriously. "After finishing my studies I had to decide whether get a job or start a professional sporting career. It was a difficult decision. I have always struggled in thinking if I'm making the right choices. People told me I was losing my time but I always told to myself, 'one more try.' And once my career lifted up I thought that I wouldn't take away from my life something that was beneficial for me. For me it was something magical to be involved in athletics because I believe I was born to practise it. It is a beautiful environment and I have met extraordinary people. It has also taught me a lot." (gem.gob.mx, 26 Jan 2021; hidalgosport.com, 17 Jan 2021)

MOTHER INSPIRATION
As a young girl she did not like sports, however her mother, Guadalupe, was passionate about them. Every four years, her mother used to watch the Olympic Games. "My mother knew about all sports and how they were all judged. I was so amazed that I once said that I wanted to go to the Olympic Games. I actually wanted to go see them and not to compete at them!" In 2012, two years after her mother passed away, she began running at her university, and in late 2020 she qualified to compete in the marathon event at the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo. "The year 2020 was so special for me because my mother died 10 years before. I think that she sees me from heaven and she must be very proud of me. It makes me so happy that I, her daughter, could compete at the Games. For me it's like honouring her name by saying there is an Olympian in our family." (hidalgosport.com, 17 Jan 2021)

BENEFICIAL POSTPONEMENT
She says the rescheduling of the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo was beneficial for her as it gave her more time to meet the qualifying standard. "I had more time to train. I was not put under pressure by other competitions so for me it was a sort of relief. I could rest my body and after a short time I was stronger to retake my trainings."
