He used to play water polo but he kept on getting ill. His mother, a former international hurdler, then took him to an athletics try out. "My mother was a teacher at the athletics academy at the Jose del Cabo stadium [in Santiago de Cuba, Cuba]. I did a try out and we all decided I had to switch to athletics.
