He took up sprinting and long jump at age five, and began triple jump at age 13. "I had success as a sprinter, winning gold medals in the district and state-level meets. I didn't train seriously during that time though. It was more about having fun for me. I gradually shifted to long jump as I grew up, because my father saw the potential in me."
