He took up race walking in 2006 in Kerala, India. (thehindu.com, 07 Sep 2012)

"There was one walker in my village named Ribas. He was considered the best walker in Kerala. I used to serve refreshments to Ribas and sometimes note his training times. One day, some of my friends suggested I try race walking when I accompany Ribas. I tried it for a few days and started liking it. That was the turning point in my life." General Interest

General
OCCUPATION
In 2010 he joined the Indian Army under a sports quota programme that allows him to train and compete internationally. "Coach Jalan PS asked me if I was interested in joining the Army. Back then being a soldier wasn't seen as such a great career prospect. Today [speaking in 2019] all the support I have in the sport is because of the army." (Facebook profile, 31 May 2020; espn.com, 02 Oct 2019; olympic.ind.in, 05 Apr 2018)

COMMONWEALTH EXIT
He was sent home from the 2018 Commonwealth Games in Gold Coast, QLD, Australia, after needles were found in his room, violating the Games' 'no needle' policy. The Athletics Federation of India [AFI] gave him a warning after no anti-doping violation was found. (hindustantimes.com, 02 May 2018; thehindu.com, 16 Apr 2018)

LONDON BREAKTHROUGH
He finished 10th in the 20km race walk at the 2012 Olympic Games in London. "Generally people end their career with the Olympics but for me it was different as I started my career with it. I had no expectations but giving my best out there. My father works on the field and my mother is a housewife. We have land and amenities, but before the Olympics I had absolutely nothing, so getting the basics such as professional equipment was difficult. Since my Olympic participation a lot of things have changed on a positive note for race walking in India." (sportskeeda.com, 05 Mar 2016)

FURTHER EDUCATION
He has studied economics at Devagiri College in Calicut, India. (Facebook profile, 31 May 2020)
