He took up athletics while he was at primary school in South Africa. He took a few years away from the sport while in high school to play rugby instead, until 2008 when he decided to focus on athletics. (iol.co.za, 15 Mar 2016; The VillageGuy Paarl Youtube channel, 22 Feb 2019)

"I always loved running. My siblings, family members and I used to race each other in the streets or race the other kids in the neighbourhood to see who was the fastest. We used to put crates in the road. That's how it all started in track and field. I grew up in a shack in Amstelhof [Paarl, South Africa]. I grew up underprivileged and a lot of things were scarce, but we still managed to get food at night. My mother has always managed to get something. Sport has been the reason for my escape from being on the streets with drugs and gangsterism. It changed my life in so many ways, ways I never thought could happen."
