General Interest

General
POST APARTHEID FIRST
At the 2012 Olympic Games in London he became the first athlete representing South Africa to compete in an Olympic 50km race walking event since the country's return to the Games in Barcelona in 1992 after a 32-year absence. The last South African male athlete to compete in the event was George Hazel at the 1960 Olympic Games in Rome. "It was a tremendous occasion in my life and one that I had trained for and waited for most of my life. It was quite a surreal moment once it had actually materialised." (SportsDeskOnline, 23 Jul 2021; Facebook page, 10 Jun 2016; trackfield97.com, 01 Apr 2013)

He has worked as a sports administrator for the International Bowling Federation, as a football team liaison officer at the 2010 World Cup in South Africa and as a hotel liaison officer at the Vancouver Rugby Sevens tournament in British Colombia, Canada. He has fulfilled further off-field sporting roles, including as sports director of the 2019 Alberta Masters Games in Rocky Mountain House, AB, Canada, as a national sports administrator for University Sport South Africa [USSA] and as an announcer and commentator at athletics events in South Africa. From 2002 to 2005 he also coached cricket, rugby and athletics at Pretoria Boys High School in South Africa and he has served as a director of the JCN Mundell medical business, based in Edmonton, AB, Canada.
