As a child she used to watch her mother coach cross-country runners. "My mum suggested I run because I was so bored waiting for her. I started jogging cross-country races in the U9 section and finished 55th in my first race as a six-year-old. I have always had a passion for running and I wanted to run in a college environment with a dream of competing at the Olympic Games one day." "My dreams and goals for life are big, as I believe small goals are just stepping stones to prepare you for your big dream and future in life. I also think dreams will not be rewarding if you don't put in hard work, and sacrifice other things to get that dream." (Facebook profile, 23 Jun 2020)

LIVING IN THE UNITED STATES
In 2011 she moved from South Africa to the United States of America to study and compete at the University of Arkansas. She says she found it tough at first, but after meeting and marrying her husband there, she remained in the United States of America. In mid-2019 she and her husband relocated from Fayetteville, AR, to Boulder, CO. "The low point of my collegiate career was being so far away from my home, family and support system. It was very hard to adjust to living on a completely different continent and being seven hours apart from my family. I'm very close to my mum, dad and sister, so moving across the world to follow my dream was not an easy decision. One of the best things I learned during my time as a student athlete was to have balance in my life. I would not have succeeded if I had purely focused on running. I needed to get my academics done and I needed to have friendships outside of running." (nwaonline.com, 22 Jun 2020; teamsa.co.za, 15 Mar 2015)
