His talent was spotted by a coach who was a friend of one of Desalu's teachers. He was inspired to switch from football to athletics by Italian athlete Andrew Howe. "I played football in primary school, but I have bad memories of it as I was always on the bench. I had no idols in football. I started athletics when Howe was having success running and jumping. I grew up watching him." (atleticalive.it, 29 Jun 2016; corriere.it, 02 Jan 2019)

General Interest

General
CHANGE OF COACH
He says he split with coach Giangiacomo Contini after Contini said he would not be able to run under 20.4s in the 200m at the 2018 European Championships in Berlin, Germany. He went on to record a time of 20.13s in Berlin. "I managed 20.13s because I changed my mentality. I was eager to show that I could run a good time to my former coach, Giangiacomo Contini. After 11 years with him I was lacking motivation. I like going to the blocks with ambition. Three weeks before the European championships we had a fight, as he said I could not run 20.4s in Berlin. I needed a change and began training with Sebastian Bacchieri. Sebastian is a true friend. Whatever he tells me to do, I do it. I am happy with the change of coach. I risked ending up like a boiled frog." (corriere.it, 02 Jan 2019)

HERITAGE
His family is of Nigerian origin, but he was born and raised in Italy and acquired full Italian citizenship in 2012. "I have never been to Nigeria and, right now [2019], I don't feel the need to go. I don't even know the national anthem of Nigeria. My roots are in Africa and I don't ignore them but I consider myself deeply Italian." (fidal.it, 23 Aug 2015; corriere.it, 02 Jan 2019)
