His talent was spotted by a coach who was a friend of one of Desalu's teachers. He was inspired to switch from football to athletics by Italian athlete Andrew Howe. "I played football in primary school, but I have bad memories of it as I was always on the bench. I had no idols in football. I started athletics when Howe was having success running and jumping.
