His wife Mirna Ortiz represented Guatemala in the 20km walk at the 2012 and 2016 Olympic Games, and won silver in the 50km walk at the 2019 Pan American Games in Lima, Peru. His brother Bernardo Uriel and his cousin Jose Alejandro have also competed in race walking at international level. He followed his parents into athletics. He initially took part in distance running, but switched to race walking after a knee injury. "They [his parents] got me involved in sports as they were long-distance runners. I started running with them to become a marathoner. Jorge [Coy, his first coach] started to make me do race walking as rehabilitation, but I did not like it. I travelled to Guatemala City for a 10km competition in which I performed poorly. I finished fifth and cried." He later relocated to Guatemala City in order to start training with Cuban coach Rigoberto Medina.
