LATE BLOOMER
He decided to take up race walking at age 23 as he was unhappy with his life working as a clerk in Guatemala City, Guatemala. He had been inspired by his older brother Erick's achievements in the sport and approached a coach who offered to train him on a three-month trial basis. He went on to win medals at national competitions before claiming his first gold medal at the 2017 Central American Games in Managua, Nicaragua. "I was a person who thought that everything would end in an office and now I think that going to the Olympic Games is the most important thing. I showed up to training on that first day without knowing how to walk, with technical problems and out of shape but Erick and coach Mirna Ortiz placed their faith in me and I am someone who knows that goals can be met, because working hard earns the respect and affection of many people."
