In 2004 she joined her first club, in the Gash-Barka region of Eritrea. "I remember my time in the club fondly, as that was the place where I learned the basics of running and how to be the athlete I am today." (raimoq.com, 02 Feb 2017)

"At first I had little interest in sports. I was a dancer, and my instructors always told me that I could do well in athletics. I had never thought about it before, but they ended up convincing me to compete in a 400m race, and I won it. In 2004, there was a competition in Barentu [Eritrea], and I once again came in first place. Afterwards I joined the Setit Athletic Club." (raimoq.com, 02 Feb 2017)

To compete at the Olympic Games. (raimoq.com, 02 Feb 2017)

General Interest

General
GENDER EQUALITY
She believes the amount of opportunities for female Eritrean athletes has increased since she started out in the sport. "Our community [in Eritrea] wasn't supportive. I dare say that nowadays our society's support for sportswomen is a lot better than before. Let's take my family for instance, they strongly wanted me to quit athletics, they had no idea that I could achieve this much. It took me a lot of time and dedication to make them understand and eventually make them feel proud of me. My family then became my biggest support system. There were a lot of great female athletes that started at the same time as me and they had potential, however they were unable to make their dreams come true because of the challenges a girl faces. I have a message for fellow female athletes - have a clear vision and work hard towards realising it." (raimoq.com, 02 Feb 2017)

FROM TRACK TO ROAD
Early in her career she specialised in track events, but she later switched her focus to marathon and half marathon running. "Truth be told, it was anger that prompted me to quit track after I missed out on Olympic qualification by a few seconds. I do plan to return to the track one day." (raimoq.com, 02 Feb 2017)
