He initially played football. One morning he went to the stadium with his friends and there was a 5km road race being held. His friends persuaded him to take part in the race, and he finished fifth. His performance was noticed by an athletics coach who came to his football training and told him he had potential in athletics. He combined the two sports until his coach convinced him to focus on athletics. (IAAF, 16 Jul 2012)
