General
The ROC qualified for the 2020 Olympic Games through their win at the 2019 European Champions Cup, held in St. Petersburg.

The Russian Federation has a nearly unblemished record since the team event was added to the Olympic programme in 1996. The only time they have not won gold was in Atlanta when the event debuted, there they finished fourth. Their most recent gold at the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro came in fairly clear-cut fashion, their 196.1439 points more than 3 points clear of the silver medallists from the People's Republic of China.

The Russian team's dominance has extended to the world championships, where they have won every technical and free routine team event since 2007. Prior to 2007 the Russians claimed four world titles in the team event [1998-2005]. At the 2020 European Championships, held in May 2021, the Russians claimed victory in the technical routine but did not compete in the free routine.
