Japan received an automatic qualification place as host nation of the 2020 Olympic Games, maintaining their record of competing in every team event since it was added to the Olympic programme at the 1996 Games in Atlanta. Only the Russian Federation's five Olympic medals in the team event are more than Japan's tally of four.

Japan secured their first Olympic podium in the team event in 12 years when they claimed the bronze medal at the 2016 Games in Rio de Janeiro. Previously, they won three straight medals - a bronze and two silvers - at the 1996, 2000 and 2004 Games.

Between 1973 and 2007, Japan won a team medal at every edition of the world championships, including gold in the free combination in 2003. They failed to win a medal between 2009 and 2013, but returned to the podium in 2015 by winning bronze in all three team events.

At the most recent edition of the world championships in 2019, Japan just missed the podium in all three team disciplines, finishing fourth in each.
