Lara Mechnig and Marluce Schierscher secured Liechtenstein's first-ever Olympic appearance in the event through their performance at the Olympic qualifying tournament held in June 2021 in Barcelona. They finished eighth overall in Barcelona to clinch their spot in Tokyo.

The pair competed in the preliminary rounds at the world championships in 2017 and 2019, but did not advance to the final on either occasion. At the 2020 European Championships in Budapest, which took place in May 2021, Mechnig and Schierscher placed ninth in the free routine.
