Twin sisters Alexandra and Yekaterina Nemich qualified Kazakhstan into the duet event for the sixth consecutive Olympic Games through their performances at the 2019 World Championships. They finished 15th in the technical routine and 16th in the free routine to earn their place.

Kazakhstan equalled their best Asian Games result in 2014 when the Nemich twins claimed bronze in Incheon, Republic of Korea, a result they repeated in 2018.

In 2017, the sisters delivered Kazakhstan's highest-ever rankings at the world championships when they finished 12th in the free routine and 13th in the technical.
