Costanza Ferro and Linda Cerruti automatically gained a qualification berth for the duet competition in Tokyo as a result of Italy's triumph in the team event at the Olympic qualification tournament held in June 2021 in Barcelona.

Tokyo will be Cerruti and Ferro's second Olympic participation as a duet, having finished in sixth place at the 2016 Games in Rio. Since Rio, they have competed at two editions of the world championships. Their best result during this period was a fifth-place finish in the technical routine in Gwangju in 2019. They finished one place down the rankings in sixth in the free routine in 2019, matching their result in both the free and technical routine from 2017.
