Evangelia Platanioti and Evangelia Papazoglou qualified for Tokyo through Greece's performance in the team event at the Olympic qualifying tournament held in Barcelona in June 2021. Greece clinched third place in Barcelona, just ahead of the US and French teams, which automatically secured Greece a qualification berth for the women's duet competition at the 2020 Games.
Tokyo will be Platanioti and Papazoglou's second consecutive Olympic appearance as a duet. The pair finished 10th in the qualifying round in Rio in 2016 to secure a place in the final, where they ended the tournament in 10th place. Four years earlier in London, Platanioti finished in eighth place alongside Despoina Solomou.
An eighth-place finish in the free routine at the 2017 World Championships in Budapest, Hungary, represents their best result on the world stage since the Rio Games. The pair placed ninth in the technical routine in 2017, and ninth again in both the technical and free routines at world championships in Gwangju in 2019. Since the 2016 Games, the pair have only competed at one edition of the European championships, in Scotland in 2018, where they recorded fifth and sixth-place finishes in the free and technical routines, respectively.
