Claudia Holzner and Jacqueline Simoneau were guaranteed a spot at the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo courtesy of Canada's performance in the team event at the 2019 Pan American Games in Lima, Peru. The Canadian team won gold in Peru, which automatically gained Canada one quota spot for the duet competition at the 2020 Games.

The pair won gold in duet at the 2019 Pan American Games in Lima, defending the title Simoneau had won four years earlier with Karine Thomas. Holzner and Simoneau finished in seventh place in both the free and technical routines at the 2017 World Championships in Budapest, Hungary. They repeated that result in the free routine two years later in Gwangju, but were able to rise one place in the technical routine to sixth position.
