The ROC qualified for Tokyo by way of their second-place finish at the 2018 World Championships. At the event held in Doha, Qatar, the Russians finished well behind the winning United States of America team and less than half a point ahead of the People's Republic of China. All three nations won their Olympic places via their podium finishes.

At the 2016 Olympic Games, the Russian Federation finished the qualification phase ranked third, but managed to overhaul the Chinese team in the final to reach silver, equalling their effort from four years earlier in London. Since 1996, the Russian Federation have only failed to win an Olympic medal once, in 2008, but have yet to win gold.

The Russian Federation repeated their 2018 world championships silver at the 2019 edition, again finishing behind the US team. It was their 10th world titles medal since 1994, but only one of those is gold.

In continental competition, the Russian Federation have won two of the past three team titles, however they did not compete in the most recent edition held in Turkey in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
