Canada ranked ninth in the qualification phase at the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro, missing out on the final by less than a point. Their best result at the Olympic Games is fifth, which they managed at London 2012 and Los Angeles 1984. Tokyo is their 11th Olympic appearance since the team's debut at the 1968 Games in Mexico City.

The team qualified for Tokyo through their performance at the 2019 World Championships in Stuttgart, where they placed seventh. In 14 appearances at the tournament since 1994, the closest Canada have come to a world championship medal is their fourth-place finish in 2018 in Doha.

The Canadian women are the reigning Commonwealth Games champions following their gold medal in 2018 in Gold Coast. They won silver at the 2019 Pan American Games, which was their third successive silver at the Games.
