The Belgian team competed at the Olympic Games for the first time in 68 years at Rio 2016. They placed 12th out of the 12 teams that competed, although the only apparatus on which they ranked 12th was the vault. Their Olympic debut came at the 1948 Games in London, where they finished 11th out of 11 teams.
The Belgian women's team qualified for Tokyo through their performance at the 2019 World Championships in Stuttgart, where they were ranked 10th. It was their best result at the tournament in nine appearances since 1995.
At the 2018 European Championships in Glasgow, Scotland, the Belgians withdrew from the team competition before the final in order to preserve their gymnasts for the individual events. In nine appearances at the tournament from 1996 to 2018, their highest rank is the sixth-place finish they managed in 2012.
