The Republic of Korea ranked 11th at the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro, which was their ninth appearance at the Games. The Korean men first contested the Olympic team all-around competition at Tokyo 1964, and they have appeared at the last seven editions. The closest they have come to winning an Olympic medal is their fourth-place finish at the 2004 Games in Athens.

The Republic of Korea finished ninth at the 2019 World Championships in Stuttgart, which secured their qualification for Tokyo. In 14 attempts, they have been unable to win a world championship medal, with their best result at the tournament fifth [1999 and 2007].

In continental competition, the Korean team are consistent contenders. They have won 10 Asian Games medals since 1974, but never claimed gold. It is a similar story at the Asian championships, where they have collected five medals since 2003 without securing a title.
