General Interest

General
Japan are the reigning Olympic champions in the men's team all-around competition. They have enjoyed success in the event since winning their first medal [silver] in 1956. The team's gold at Rio 2016 was their seventh Olympic title, and 13th medal overall. Japan's run of five consecutive gold medals from 1960 to 1976 included victory on home soil at Tokyo 1964, and they also triumphed at the 2004 Games.

In Rio de Janeiro, they topped the podium ahead of the Russian and Chinese teams after they produced the highest-scoring performances on the floor, vault and horizontal bar in the final.

The Japanese team qualified for Tokyo 2020 by winning bronze at the 2018 World Championships in Doha. They also won bronze at the 2019 World Championships, which was their 20th medal from 23 appearances at the tournament. They claimed their sixth world title at the 2015 edition.

Japan have won 12 Asian Games medals since 1974, although only one of those was gold, in 2014. At the 2018 edition they were runners-up behind the Chinese team.
