The People's Republic of China have finished on the podium seven times in their nine appearances at the Olympic Games, winning gold medals in 2000, 2008 and 2012. As two-time defending champions at the 2016 Games in Rio de Janeiro, they finished behind Japan and the Russian Federation to claim bronze.

The Chinese men's team have been crowned champions on 11 of the past 14 occasions the event has been held at the world championships. A run of six consecutive world titles was ended in 2015, but they returned to the top of the podium in 2018. That victory also secured the team's qualification for the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo. At the most recent edition of the world championships in 2019, the Chinese team had to settle for silver, narrowly behind the Russian Federation.

In 12 appearances at the Asian Games, the People's Republic of China have collected 11 gold medals. The only time they missed the top step of the podium was in 2014 when they took bronze. They have also claimed five Asian championship titles since 2003, including at the 2019 edition.
