General Interest

General
The Republic of Korea have won gold at all eight editions of the Olympic Games since 1988. At the 2016 Games in Rio de Janeiro, they defeated the Russian Federation 5-1 in the final, having beaten Asian rivals Japan and Chinese Taipei by the same scoreline in the knockout stages. It was the first time since 2000 that their opponent in an Olympic gold medal match was a team other than the People's Republic of China.

They have also beaten Ukraine [2000] and Germany [1996] in Olympic finals, as well as the Chinese team again in 1992, and finished ahead of second-placed Indonesia in 1988 when the format did not involve head-to-head match ups.

The Korean team qualified for Tokyo via the 2019 World Championships in 's-Hertogenbosch, Netherlands, where they were the top-ranked team following the qualification round. They had to settle for silver though, after a 6-2 defeat by Chinese Taipei in the final. As of 2019 the Koreans have won 13 world titles and claimed 21 world championship medals in total.
