General Interest

General
Great Britain are competing at the Olympic Games for the sixth time at Tokyo 2020. They are yet to win a medal, but came closest to making the podium at the 2008 Games in Beijing where they were beaten in the bronze medal match by France. Their most recent Olympic appearance was as hosts at London 2012, which ended when they were beaten by the Russian Federation in the first round.

The British team's record at the Olympic Games is in contrast to their performances at the world championships, where they have a long history of success. Great Britain amassed 22 medals [five gold, seven silver, 10 bronze] from 1933 to 2019, but only two of those have come since 1979 - bronze in 2007 and 2019. Their bronze medal at the 2019 edition of the tournament in 's-Hertogenbosch, Netherlands, secured their place at Tokyo 2020. They were defeated by the Republic of Korea in the semifinals, but a 5-4 win over the Chinese team in the third-place match meant they finished on the podium for the first time in 12 years.

At the 2019 European Games, the British team defeated hosts Belarus 6-2 in the final to claim their first title at the tournament.
