The People's Republic of China have competed at all eight editions of the Olympic Games since 1988. They have won four silver medals in that time, losing the gold medal to the Republic of Korea on each occasion. In Rio de Janeiro in 2016, the Chinese team were defeated in the quarterfinals by Italy. After a draw in the first set, both teams won a set before the Italians prevailed in the fourth.

The Chinese team secured qualification for Tokyo 2020 at the 2019 World Championships in 's-Hertogenbosch, Netherlands, where they lost to eventual champions Chinese Taipei in the semifinals and were defeated by Great Britain in the third-place match. They also finished fourth at the 2017 edition, and have not won a world championship medal since their maiden world title in 2001.

The People's Republic of China claimed silver at the 2019 Asian Championships behind the Republic of Korea, and finished fourth at the 2018 Asian Games in Indonesia.
