The Belarusian team are making their Olympic debut in Tokyo. They secured their place by reaching the quarterfinals at the 2019 World Championships in 's-Hertogenbosch, Netherlands, where they overcame Poland and India in the first two elimination rounds. They were then beaten 6-0 in the last eight by eventual champions Chinese Taipei. Belarus won one medal in 11 appearances at the world championships from 1997 to 2019, a silver following defeat to the Republic of Korea in the final in 2013.

At continental level, Belarus have recorded their most notable results at the European Games. They won silver at the inaugural Games in 2015, and repeated the feat four years later as hosts in Minsk where they lost to Great Britain in the gold medal match.
