Italy claimed the last spot available in the women's tournament at the 2020 Olympic Games. In June 2021, at the Universality Olympic Qualifying Tournament, they narrowly defeated hosts Hungary 13-12 in the final to qualify for Tokyo.

The Italian team's most notable result is their 2018 World Cup title. Despite finishing behind the Czech Republic in the pool phase in 2018, they went on to beat the US and Chinese teams to set up a final with the Russian Federation. Italy triumphed 16-12 in the final to be crowned world champions for the first time. They have not progressed past the quarterfinals at any of their four other World Cup appearances, and at the 2019 edition they were eliminated at the quarterfinal stage by France.

Italy's best Europe Cup performance also came in 2018, when they finished fourth. In 2019 they ranked 11th at the Europe Cup and 10th at the European Games, not managing to record a win at either competition.
