General Interest

'ACCIDENTAL' CHAMPION
At the 2021 World Single Distance Championships, she was supposed to speed up the field in the final laps to allow her compatriot Irene Schouten to win. Due to a miscommunication, Groenewoud started sprinting too early, and Schouten was never able to catch up, leaving Groenewoud to successfully outsprint the field. "The goal was to win and we did. It's a shame about the miscommunication, but we can be proud to have finished first and third." (schaatsen.nl, 13 Feb 2021)

BAKER
Through the 2019/20 season, she worked at a cake bakery, but she decided to focus on skating for the next season. "Amazing work, but impossible for me to combine with being a top athlete." (skatenl.nl, 25 Oct 2021)

GRANDFATHER
She says she is not really from a speed skating family, except for her grandfather: "Aged 18, he skated the 1956 Eleven Cities Tour (a 200km natural ice race in the Netherlands)." (skatenl.nl, 25 Oct 2021)
