General Interest

UNSUCCESSFUL SWITCH
In 2009, along with several teammates, he attempted to represent Kazakhstan internationally, which would save him the trouble of facing tough opposition to make the Dutch team. But after the International Skating Union refused to let the skaters compete at the World Cup and when the expected option of dual citizenship became unavailable, he abandoned his plans. "By now, I could have had an apartment in Astana and a fancy car," he quipped after winning Olympic gold in 2014, referring to the promised rewards had he represented Kazakhstan. (volkskrant.nl, 18 Feb 2014)

RETIREMENT
At age 35, he is one of the older skaters on the circuit, yet he has no retirement plans. "Who knows, I might go for the Olympics in four years time. It could very well be. It's going very well now, and I still enjoy It very much." (nu.nl, 18 Nov 2021)
