General Interest

TEAM SWITCH
In 2020, he unexpectedly switched commercial teams. After Kjeld Nuis (NED) joined Verbij's team Reggeborgh, a spot opened up in Nuis' former team Jumbo-Visma. Encouraged by his friend Thomas Krol (NED), who bombarded him with requests to join him at Jumbo-Visma, Verbij eventually made the switch. "I thought about it long and hard. Eventually, I thought, if I don't do this now, I'll regret it later. I don't want to look back at this time in two years and think, 'I really should have made the switch.'" (nu.nl, 15 May 2020)

HERITAGE
Born in the Netherlands to a Dutch father and Japanese mother, he remains in touch with his Japanese heritage. He made his World Cup debut in Obihiro, with his maternal grandparents on the stands. He has Japanese followers and regularly communicates in Japanese on his social media channels. (Schaatsseizoen 48, 2020)

SINGING SISTER
As a seventeen-year-old, his sister Mai was scouted by a Japanese record company to sing for a pop group and was brought to Japan two years later. A combination of homesickness and culture clash eventually saw her collapse during an audition, and she returned to the Netherlands. (ad.nl, 17 May 2020)
