Wanted to try out for rink hockey as a seven-year-old, but his mother dropped him off at the wrong hall, where inline speed skating training took place. Michael never regretted the mistake and stuck with the sport. He switched to speed skating because it allowed him to compete at the Olympic Games. Additionally, there was more funding is available in the sport. "There was an opportunity for me to try it the summer after teammate Shane Dobbin competed at the Olympics.
