Winning 10000m gold, in world record time, at the 2020 World Championships in Salt Lake City. "It's super, super cool. I mean I never thought I'd be this good. Once I started building down in to those nines, and my coach just starting to say, 'World record, world record', I was like, 'Just keep doing what you're doing. Don't rush things.' The world record is pretty cool. This gold medal is awesome. I can't believe it." (Skating ISU YouTube, 15 Feb 2020)

Milestones

Finished sixth in the 10000m at the Beijing 2022 Olympic Winter Games.

Broke the 10000m world record (12:33.86), in February 2020 at the World Championships in Salt Lake City. Finished 2.44 seconds ahead of teammate Ted-Jan Bloemen (CAN), who held the record for almost five years. Became the third non-Dutch and second Canadian to hold the record. The record was broken a year later by Nils van der Poel (SWE), at the 2021 World Championships in Heerenveen. His time is still a national record. Also, holds the national junior record in the same distance.

Became the first non-Dutch speed skater to win the 10000m at the World Single Distance Championships, after winning the event in 2020 (teammate Ted-Jan Bloemen was born in the Netherlands).

Finished the 2019/20 season third overall in the 5000m/10000m, finishing on the podium three times.

Two National Championship titles in the 1500m (2019) and 5000m (2020). National Junior champion in 2017 (5000m).
