General Interest

RISE, FALL AND RISE
As a junior, he was talented in both short track and long track speed skating. In 2010, he was a runner-up at the junior world championships in short track, and bronze medallist in long track. "Then, I started hitting walls". A combination of physical problems (glandular fever, tendinitis, asthma), over-training and a bad work environment (his trainer allegedly accused him of faking his asthma attacks) sent him into a depression. "I got to a point where, after two years of trying to figure out what was wrong with me, I was so afraid I couldn’t even do moderate exercise without experiencing a panic attack." At age 19, in 2012, he retired from the sport, and focused on other passions and pursuits. One of these was half a year of travel in Asia: "It allowed me to take another look at myself." An encounter in a bar in Montreal, QC, CAN, with skating coach Steve Robillard, led him back to skating. "None of the hours, weeks, or months of the year it took were easy, but it was done right." After narrowly missing Olympic qualification in 2018, he succeeded in his ambition for the 2022 Games. (eronid.com, 2022; Athlete website, 2022)

TABOO
He hopes that being open about what he went through will help break the taboo of depression in sports: “In the competitive world, a psychological problem is a weakness, and some can use it against you. I did not dare to ask for help and I ended up isolating myself." (eronid.com, 2022)
