First tried roller skating at 14 months. Started speed skating in 2008 in Baselga di Pine. "I was born in Frascati but my family immediately moved to Rome. In Rome, I started on wheels at the Tre Fontane, then I trained behind the cars on the street. I had to be focused when you're skating at 60-70 per hour with people honking your horn. Of course, now I would no longer do it seeing the conditions of the streets of Rome." (eurosport.it, 5 Feb 2018)

General Interest

PERENNIAL FOURTH
Has placed fourth in her favourite event (mass start) at the World Single Distance Championships four times. First ranked fourth in 2016, and has repeated the performance in 2017, 2019 and 2021 (fifth in 2020). At the Beijing 2022 Olympic Winter Games, she is looking to break that pattern and move up to the podium.

STARTING ON ICE
After the Torino 2006 Olympic Winter Games, she decided that she wanted to start speed skating on ice, but she needed to train in Baselga, a 700km drive from Rome. "My father would drive me there after school for the weekend (it was a 6-hour drive) and we’d come back on Sundays, or I would sleep in the train on Friday nights and be back on Sundays to be at school on Mondays. It wasn’t easy." (rollerenligne.com)

INLINE SKATING
Prefers inline speed skating to racing on ice. "There are many more inline skaters in Italy than skaters. In an Italian Championship, there are no more than fifty riders. In inline skating, there are more than eight hundred. People also only know figure skating and short track. When you mention long track speed skating, they say, 'I've never heard of that.'" (schaatsen.nl, 15 Jun 2017)

FAMOUS RELATIVE
Due to her unique surname, she is often asked if she is a relative of 1950s and 1960s actress and sex symbol, Gina Lollobrigida. While they are related (Gina is Francesca's great-aunt), they are not acquainted. (vanityfair.it, 2018)

SPEEDING
In Rome, she was once fined for inline skating over 50 km/h in a zone where only 30 km/h was allowed. (sportfolks.net, 2018)
