General Interest

FAMILY RIVALRY
At the 2022 German Single Distance Championships, 49-year-old Pechstein won her 40th (3000m) and 41st (5000m) national title, beating 19-year-old Victoria Stirnemann, who won bronze in both distances. Victoria's mother is Gunda Niemann-Stirnemann, whom Pechstein beat to Olympic 5000m gold at Lillehammer 1994 and Nagano 1998. (bild.de, 30 Oct 2021)

DOPING
During the 2009 World Allround Championships, she was removed from the competition as her blood passport indicated use of illegal substances and she was given a two-year suspension. She denied the accusation and claimed the anomalous values were due to an inherited condition. She attempted to overturn the suspension in court but failed to do so before the Court of Arbitration for Sport and the Swiss federal court, causing her to miss the Vancouver 2010 Olympic Winter Games. She returned to competition in 2011.

POLITICAL AMBITIONS
Participated in the 2021 German federal elections, standing as a candidate in Berlin for the Christian Democratic Union (CDU) party, but was not elected. (cdu.berlin, 2021)
