:

Grew up in the small town of Vernon, British Columbia. Downhill skied from age seven to nine when his parents could afford to get him lift tickets. "My dad actually started ski patrolling so he could get a family ski pass because we were living on a single income from my dad alone. I started snowboarding when I was nine, due to the fact that it was the more cool thing to do." (cbc.ca, 3 Dec 2019)

:

Since he was 12 he did local slopestyle, halfpipe, and boarder x events that would start at the top of the halfpipe and finish at the bottom of the park at his home hill of Silver Star Mountain Resort. "I had no idea that snowboard cross was a real event till around 2006 when I caught a little of the Olympics [Torino 2006] replays on Youtube." (cbc.ca, 3 Dec 2019)

:

"I was driven to be a Canadian Olympian and I knew I'd do whatever it would take to get to that stage. Follow your dreams, don't let money or anything stand in your way, if you want it bad enough, you can get people around you to help you out." (cbc.ca, 3 Dec 2019)

:

He is vegan, eats healthy, plant-based, not only during the competitive season but all throughout the year. Strength training at the gym six days a week. "I've always loved keeping my body in shape even outside of sport. The psychology part of it has been strong for me, keeping a good mental game and knowing what I need to focus on the get to the podium." (cbc.ca, 3 Dec 2019)

General Interest

BMX BACKGROUND
His experience racing as a professional BMX rider helped him when he made the switch to snowboard cross. "I'm no stranger to the traffic and contact with BMX. I blend right in there and feel comfortable." (Info 2018)

KEY TO BEING A GOOD SBX COMPETITOR
Being really tough mentally. "It's a really hard sport to break into the ranks especially these days with everyone training so hard to be the best. Knowing that snowboard cross is a sport of skill, some luck, and gravity so you can't always be #1 so keep pushing towards your goal." (cbc.ca, 3 Dec 2019)

SOCHI 2014 OLYMPIC WINTER GAMES CRASH
In the Sochi 2014 semi-final, while in second place, the rider behind him had the draft and eventually caught up to him and landed on the tail of his snowboard. " I was going around 70 Km/h and it felt like someone tripped me and I went straight to my face and my goggles shattered into pieces.
Luckily other than a scratched face and the wind knocked out of me, I was fine." (cbc.ca, 3 Dec 2019)
