Started snowboarding at age four and was competing the next year. Grew up competing in skiing and snowboarding, but at age 11 he focused on snowboarding.

His mother kept him involved in various sports like hockey and skiing. When he saw his father snowboarding, "I was like, 'Oh, I want to do that'." (cbc.ca, 1 Feb 2022)
