Started snowboarding at age four. After riding in the mountains with her family, she joined a local snowboarding club at the indoor snow hall in Terneuzen, the Netherlands and started training her freestyle skills. "As a toddler I went on holiday to Austria twice in winter with my parents. That's how I learned to ski quickly, but because my parents mainly snowboarded, I wanted to try that too. When I was four, my father gave me lessons in Terneuzen, on the indoor ski slope nearby, which is still my home base. Four years later I entered my first competition in Austria." BEIJING 2022 BELGIUM SNOWBOARD TEAM SELECTION
Her selection for Beijing 2022 aroused a debate because Belgium's Olympic quota of one athlete had been secured by the results of her teammate Loranne Smans (13th in the rankings), who eventually had been overtaken by Poppe (36th in the rankings) thanks to the internal selection criteria of Belgium snowboard federation. "We want to keep the selection procedure objective," explained spokesperson Christophe Coppens after Smans posted on her Instagram page an argumentative story on having not been selected: "I've lost all my faith in the federation. This is dishonest and humiliating," she wrote. "The three best results at World Cups, world championships and premium European Cups count in this," Coppens said. "We have followed the rules that have been drawn up in the past. This is indeed very difficult for Evy. Hopefully this will not have a mental impact on her."
