"Nothing compares to my first Olympics! I was 19 and had no idea my whole world was about to change. I won this competition with my first run out of two and got what's called a "victory lap" I dropped in, did some big airs and sprayed snow into the crowd. I slid into the finish area where my family was waiting and I'll never forget their faces crying with joy. The magnitude of what I had just done hit when my mom hugged me and said, 'From now on, you will forever be known as Shaun White, the Olympic Gold Medallist.'" (Instagram, 22 Jan 2022)

General Interest

OFF SNOW AFTER PYEONGCHANG 2018 GOLD
He took a break from snowboarding after winning his third Olympic gold in 2018. After three years, he went back to World Cup competitions in March 2021 at Aspen, when he finished fourth.

2014 OLYMPIC DISAPPOINTMENT
After winning back-to-back halfpipe gold medals at the 2006 and 2010 Olympic Games, he fell twice in his first run of the final at the 2014 Games in Sochi and eventually finished fourth. "To be honest, I had been losing motivation to compete and I planned to win this last medal and retire. I had a run I felt I could win, but after scrubbing the landing on my third hit - it was all over. I was devastated. I had never been to an Olympics and lost. I had the horrible feeling of failure and this was not how I wanted my career to end. I felt lost and had no idea how I could motivate myself for another four years to have another chance. Little did I know I was being taught an incredibly valuable lesson: that things don't always go as planned in life, but that's ok. We grow from the hard times and these are the moments to reflect and appreciate the things you DO have and look forward to the next goal with experience." (Instagram, 23 Jan 2022)

VANCOUVER 2010 VICTORY LAP
"I had won the gold with my first run and for the second run, instead of taking it easy, I decided to go for it. After winning the last Olympics, I wanted to prove it wasn't a fluke and cement myself in the sport's history. I wasn't going to hold anything back. I decided to throw a trick I had invented; the double mc twist 1260 or "Tomahawk." It was the heaviest trick ever done in a halfpipe at this point. I'm so proud of this moment." (Instagram, 23 Jan 2022)

SALT LAKE CITY 2002 MISS-OUT
In 2002 at age 15 he was beaten out for the last halfpipe spot on the U.S. Olympic team by J.J. Thomas, who would win bronze at Salt Lake City 2002 (to complete an all US sweep of the podium) and later on would become his personal coach in preparation for PyeongChang 2018.
