Began snowboarding at age four at the southern California resort of Mountain High, then started competing at age six as a member of Team Mountain High. Did qualify but was unable to compete at the Sochi 2014 Olympic Winter Games due to age restrictions, being too young at age 13. Still in 2014 won silver medal at X Games.

SOUTH KOREAN ROOTS
Kim is a first-generation Korean-American, as her father emigrated from South Korea to the USA in 1982 to pursue an engineering degree. Has extended family living in South Korea. Milestones

Successfully defended her gold medal in women's halfpipe at Beijing 2022 Olympic Winter Games.

Current world, Olympic, Youth Olympic, and X Games champion in the halfpipe and first snowboarder to win the title at all four major events. During her comeback season in 2020/21, won two World Cup events out of two (in Laax and Aspen) but Crystal Globe was not assigned.

In October 2021, became first female rider to land a cab 1260 in halfpipe during a training session in Saas-Fee, Switzerland.

Youngest woman to win an Olympic snowboarding gold medal at age 17 at PyeongChang 2018.

Six-time X Games gold medallist. Made the podium in all of her eight X Games starts (six gold, one silver, one bronze). Only athlete in X Games history to earn three gold medals before the age of 16.

2019 and 2021 halfpipe world champion (two titles in two participations).

Ten wins and 12 podiums in 14 World Cup starts. She has won every World Cup event (five) she's participated in since Copper Mountain on 8 December 2018.

2016 Youth Olympic U.S. flag bearer and gold medallist.

First female rider to land a double cork 1080 in a halfpipe, first female rider to land a back-to-back 1080 at the 2016 US Open for which she received a perfect score of 100 points and became first female snowboarder to do so.
