Beijing 2022 Olympic Winter Games will be about redemption, after having fallen short of his goals at PyeongChang 2018. “I didn’t have what it takes at the last Games in PyeongChang - both mentally and technically. I’ve improved since then and I’m sure I can compete at the highest level in the world. The Olympics is an event I haven’t won gold in so I really want to win it. If I do, it takes me to a whole new place." (olympics.com, 30 Nov 2021)

Snowboarder Hirano Ayumu (JPN), two-time Olympic silver halfpipe medallist (2014, 2018). (Info 2018)

Milestones

OLYMPIC WINTER GAMES
Was 16 years of age when he made his Olympic Winter Games halfpipe debut at PyeongChang 2018, finishing 11th. During his second run of the final, he crash-landed very hard on his lower back and had to be taken off the slopes on a strecher, straight to the hospital. “I didn’t have what it takes at the last Games in PyeongChang - both mentally and technically. I’ve improved since then and I’m sure I can compete at the highest level in the world." (olympics.com, 30 Nov 2021)

WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS
Won two World Championship medals in two halfpipe starts - 2021 gold, 2019 silver. In 2021 in Aspen, he dethroned three-time defending champion Scotty James (AUS) by almost six points. He is only the second Japanese world champion after Aono Ryo in 2009.

WORLD CUP
Won his World Cup halfpipe debut in September 2017 (Cardrona), one of only a few to have ever achieved this.

In his first 15 World Cup starts, he has been on the podium 14 times, six of which are victories.

Has three podium finishes at Secret Gardens, but no victories.

2018 and 2019 halfpipe Crystal Globe winner.

OTHER
2021 X Games halfpipe champion, becoming the first-ever winner from Japan. (2020 silver medallist).

2020 US Open champion thanks to a "never-been-done" combo of frontside double cork 1440, cab double cork 1260 and switch backside double cork 1080.

Three-time national champion.
