General Interest

MOVE TO RUSSIAN FEDERATION
After originally competing for the United States of America, he became frustrated with the lack of resources for US downhill snowboarders. In 2011 he married Russian snowboarder Alena Zavarzina and was granted Russian citizenship in May 2012 in a special deal that meant he did not have to give up his US passport. "It was a little bit crazy, but I wasn't that worried about it. I knew it would give me an opportunity to stay with Alena, which was really important to me at the time. And also it would give me a chance to reach my goals in snowboarding. I knew that if I gave up, stopped, then I would probably be bitter about it." (Info 2018)

SOCHI SUCCESS
Won gold in parallel giant slalom at the 2014 Olympic Winter Games in Sochi, with his now-former wife Alena Zavarzina (OAR) winning bronze in the women's event. This was only the second time a husband and wife had won medals in the same event at the Olympic Winter Games. "My wife and I won medals, you can't ask for more. I was so stoked. I would rather we both have a medal than just one of us." (Info 2018)

DIVORCE
After a 10-year marriage, in December 2021 Alena Zavarzina announced her divorce from Vic Wild. (Alena Zavarzina Instagram, 5 Dec 2021)

THOUGHTS OF RETIREMENT AFTER BEIJING 2022
"Probably after the Olympics, we’ll see. If I qualify for and go to the Olympics, maybe I finish the season, maybe not. I’ll feel it out. Probably should have retired a long time ago. But I’m going to stop now. For me to be able to snowboard, it’s just a big sacrifice,” he said. “I can’t really do anything else because it just takes up so much time. And I’ve done everything I needed to do. "I would have retired after the Olympics in Sochi had I not won. For sure it was the easier money to keep snowboarding. And I didn’t really know how else to earn money back then. And also, I felt like I kind of was obligated to keep going for the (Russian) snowboard federation, for a lot of people that invested a lot of time in me to come to Russia."
