He was seven years old when he watched his countryman Switzerland's Simon Ammann win two Olympic gold medals in 2002 and then he wanted to start ski jumping himself. "I quite simply wanted to take up ski jumping. My parents were interested too, but what do you do when you live in La Sarraz, close to the Vallee de Joux and a long way from any ski jump? They asked people at the ski club, and found out that the ideal age to start jumping was 10. For two years, I did lots of other sports: basketball, gymnastics, etc. For my 10th birthday, I was able to take part in a ski jump initiation at Le Brassus." (olympics.com, Athlete, Oct 2021)

Ski jumper Simon Ammann (SUI), one of the most successful athletes in history having won four individual Winter Olympic gold medals, two in 2002 and two in 2010, the only ski jumper to have achieved the ski jumping gold double-double at the Olympic Winter Games. Other titles are winning the 2007 Ski Jumping World Championships, 2010 Ski Flying World Championships, and the 2009/10 overall World Cup. They became teammates. "I was inspired by how seriously he took his training, his total involvement in ski jumping. He never does things by half and works on every detail. He’s a role model." (olympics.com)

Alpine skier Didier Cuche (SUI), Olympic silver medallist in Nagano 1998, four-time world champion, won the World Cup downhill and super-G overall titles for season 2010/11 and has won three previous downhill titles in 2010, 2008, and 2007, along with a giant slalom title in 2009. General Interest

OUT OF HIS COMFORT ZONE
When he wasn't selected to compete at PyeongChang 2018 Olympic Winter Games he had to face the reality that his level wasn't high enough and he didn't meet all the criteria, physically or mentally. "I took a more professional approach to the sport. I’d already had a personal coach for a year, but even I didn’t know how I operated. He helped me get to know myself a bit better, so that I could make progress, especially at the mental level: knowing how to get out of my comfort zone. Physically, I already had the qualities needed, but I had to learn how to put them all together. Another thing is that I’d been sharing a flat for three years, and I never got out of the ski jumping mold. The people I was sharing with were and are jumpers: I went to the jump, and then to the gym, and we talked about jumping. When I went home, we still talked about it. I couldn’t “switch off”, and that was weighing me down. So I moved." (olympics.com)

Milestones

OLYMPIC WINTER GAMES
Participated in the 2012 Winter Youth Olympic Games in Innsbruck, finishing ninth. "A great experience, and a chance to find out how events at a higher level worked. It was good to discover this Olympic universe, in terms of both how the competitions were held and mixing with young athletes from all over the world and doing completely different sports, who you would never otherwise meet." (olympic.com)

Failed to qualify for PyeongChang in 2018.

WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS
Competed in four World Championships since 2013 (debut only in the team event). Winning the large hill bronze medal in 2019 was the moment when all the pieces of the puzzle came together for him. He was in the lead after his first jump. "For the second jump, I had to wait up there all on my own. Then I set off, and I didn’t know where I’d come. When I saw “number 3” appear on the screen, that was really fantastic." (olympics.com).

Missed Oberstdorf 2021 because of his knee injury.

Competed at three Junior World Championships (2013-15), with three top-10 finishes, best of sixth in 2015 (normal hill).

WORLD CUP
Career turning point was breaking into the top-10 individually at the Four Hills Tournament in January 2019 in Innsbruck (large hill, seventh).
14 top-10 and one individual podium result to date finishing second in 2019 in Nizhny Tagil (large hill).

SEASON 2021/22:
Had six top-10 finishes throughout the season, missing the podium closely twice in Engelberg (large hill), when he finished fourth in both competitions.
He is currently ranked 11th in the overall World Cup which would be his best career season. To date his best overall ranking was 17th in 2018/19.
