Started at the age of eight, joining a ski jumping club after she saw Japanese ski jumper Izumi Yamada on TV. "I was frightened at first, but once I jumped, I found it was fun. It is just like being a bird." (Info 2018; kuraray.co.jp, Aug 2021)
Influenced by her father and older brother. Her father was jumping on the team with Masahiko Harada, a two-time world champion (1993, 1997). (olympics.com, Aug 2021)
She is primed to break her Olympic curse. She admits to being "swallowed up" by the Olympic atmosphere in the past, and hopes a new jumping style will help her reach the top of the podium in Beijing. "I already have an Olympic medal, but my aim is to win gold." (japantimes.co.jp, 10 Nov 2021)
